Our expert colleague in the Digital Learning Team has provided another accessibility tool for Day #18 18 of the Arden Library Appvent CalendarReader View!

Reader View is a free browser extension that removes unnecessary content on websites, such as buttons and background images. It also changes the text size, contrast and layout of webpages to make them easier to read.

Reader View extension now works across both Chrome (access here) and Microsoft Edge (access here), as well as its original developer browser, Mozilla. Using this extension, you can remove unnecessary content from webpages with a lot of content and read them on "Reader View" mode instead. The extension allows you to switch between normal view and reader view by pressing the page-action button, and there are tools available in the left-hand side panel that can help you personalize your Reader View, including:

  • Change colour, background-colour, font-size, font-family and width of the reader view.

  • Read in full-screen mode, removing advertisements.

  • Read content aloud using a Text to Speech (TTS) engine.

  • Keyboard shortcuts for almost all actions, and more.

You can also highlight text and add sticky-notes/annotations to particularly useful sections of text as well – this is useful if you’re looking into something for an assignment or project.

If you feel you could benefit from further support and assistance around disability or learning needs, don’t forget that there is a dedicated Inclusion Team available to you here at Arden, who are committed to reducing barriers to your studies and providing the best possible support along your Arden journey!

We encourage you to get in touch with them around any concerns you may have, so that they can ensure you have the right support and can access the resources you need. You can find out more about the Inclusion Team and contact them here.
