Library Databases

Academic Search Complete

A multi-disciplinary full-text database, with more than 8,500 full-text journals.  

BAILII

The British & Irish Legal Information Institute contains British and Irish case law and legislation, European Union case law, Law Commission reports, and other law-related British and Irish materials. BAILII is a free resource but note it may not be as up to date as databases such as Westlaw UK. Check the status of any Act to see if it is provided in its original version, or if it has been revised.

BibliU

Provides access to the Key Texts for your programme all in one place. You can use BibliU online and offline using a web browser or a mobile app for Android or IOS and as this is your own personal Library you will also have the ability to highlight and take notes.

eBook Central

A multi-disciplinary collection of e-books aligned to Arden’s programmes. 

EBSCO’s eBook Collection

A multi-disciplinary collection of e-books aligned to Arden’s programmes.  

EBSCO’s Legal Source

A full-text database covering Law and Criminal Justice. It provides detailed indexing for legal journals, law reviews, yearbooks, institutes, statutes, bar association publications and university publications and contains more than 490 full text journal and magazine publications.  

EBSCO Open Dissertations

A database with records for more than 1.2 million electronic theses and dissertations from around the world. 

GALE Business: Insights

Gale Business: Insights provides users with detailed financial, historical, and current event information on over 400,000 companies, industries, and countries. Users can easily find Plunkett Reports, SWOT analyses, case studies, comparison charts, scholarly journals, and more.

Gale Power Search

GALE Power Search is a cross-search platform that enables users to do one search across multiple GALE databases.

Gale Research Complete

Gale Research Complete contains a wealth of resources including Gale eBooks (books and encyclopaedias), Gale Academic OneFile (journals), Gale General OneFile (magazines), Gale OneFile News (current newspapers), Gale Literature (English literature resources) and Archives Unbound (primary historical sources). 

Global Crime

Global Crime publishes research on crime across international settings including issues relating to general crime trends, organized criminality, corruption and state crime.

Journal of Criminal Psychology

International and multidisciplinary, the Journal of Criminal Psychology publishes both scholarly and practitioner-based research on all aspects of the psychology of criminal behaviour.

Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology

The Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology presents peer-reviewed reports and research covering the theory and application of psychological principles in criminal justice, law enforcement, courts, and corrections.

Legislation.gov.uk

Legislation.gov.uk carries most (but not all) types of legislation and their accompanying explanatory documents.  All legislation from 1988 is available (with a few minor exceptions). Legislation.gov.uk is a free resource but note it may not be as up to date as databases such as Westlaw UK. Lexis Library

Provides access to a collection of highly regarded journals, loose-leafs, e-books and practitioner texts. The collection includes the Family Law Journal and The Family Court Practice (The Red Book). 

Newswires

Provides near real-time access to top world-wide news from Associated Press, United Press International, PR Newswire, Xinhua, CNN Wire, and Business Wire on a continuous basis.

Oxford University Press Law Journals Collection

The Oxford University Press Law Journals Collection is a collection of 48 scholarly journals covering areas of legal scholarship such as commercial, economic, and refugee law, as well as criminal justice.

Police Practice and Research - An International Journal

Police Practice and Research publishes articles on developments in policing, public order, state of safety, community policing, country- or region-specific police organization and more.

SAGE Journals Premier Collection

Provides access to journal titles across a range of titles and sub-disciplines.

ScienceDirect Freedom Collection

ScienceDirect provides access to the scientific, technical and medical journals of Elsevier and participating publishers. It contains more than 18 million articles and book chapters from over 2,650 peer-reviewed journals and 42,000 e-books, including books, book series and major reference works, and digital archives that reach as far back as 1823.

Statista

Statista is a data and statistics platform that consolidates more than 1 million statistics over 80,000 topics from more than 22,500 sources.

Westlaw eBooks

A collection of practitioner texts covering a range of legal areas including Company and Commercial, Employment, Contract, Employment, EU & International, Family and Social Welfare, Human Rights, Intellectual Property, Tort and more.

Westlaw International

Provides access to International Legal Materials from countries including Australia, Canada, European Union, Hong Kong and Korea.

Westlaw UK

One of the major databases for case law, legislation, and commentary. It has the full text of the official Law Reports series and contains material back to 1220 via the English Reports. Westlaw UK also provides a ‘case analysis’ document for UK cases providing information about the case and where it has been judicially considered, and where it links to relevant legislation and commentary.  It also provides access to European cases and international case law. For legislation it contains the fully consolidated full text of Acts since 1267 and selected Statutory Instruments since 1948. 

World LII

The World Legal Information Institute: provides free, independent and non-profit access to worldwide law including a country by country listing (for constitutions, cases and legislation etc.)

Research Tools

Gorilla: Online Experiment Builder

Gorilla allows you to create behavioural experiments in your internet browser and get participants to complete them on their phone or computer. Using Gorilla, you can create response-time tasks, questionnaires, present videos, and lots more. In order to sign up to Gorilla, please follow the link above.

JAMOVI

Jamovi provides a complete suite of analyses, statistical spreadsheets, syntax modes,s and other features.

To download Jamovi, please use the ‘solid’ version. For support with Jamovi you can access the user manual.

NVivo

NVivo is a qualitative data analysis program, supporting data organisation, analysis and visualisation. You may find this useful when working with qualitative or mixed methods research where coding multiple data sources is required.

Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences

An international association established in 1963 to foster professional and scholarly activities in the field of criminal justice and criminology. ACJS promotes criminal justice and criminology education, policy analysis, and research for scholars, practitioners, and policymakers.

American Society of Criminology

 An international organisation whose members pursue scholarly, scientific, and professional knowledge concerning the measurement, consequences, prevention, control, and treatment of crime and delinquency. 

British Society of Criminology

A leading international organisation aiming to further the interests and knowledge of both scholars and practitioners involved in any aspect of professional activity, teaching, research or public education related to crime, criminal behaviour and criminal justice systems in the United Kingdom and abroad.

European Society of Criminology

The Society aims to bring together in Europe persons actively engaged in research, teaching and/or practice in the field of Criminology. Police Federation of England & Wales

Criminology Academy
