What is this course about?

We understand that it is difficult to communicate in a second language and adapt to studying in a new country and culture.

Fundamentals of Academic English has been created to help you with this. Designed by English language experts, our patient, kind and friendly Arden lecturers will guide and support you step-by-step.

This course is for non-native speakers of English who would like guidance on the academic English skills needed for university-level study. It is FREE, you do NOT need to take an English language test to be eligible to join and all the learning materials are provided through iLearn.

This course is seven weeks long, with one 2-hour lesson per week.

The course will help you to:
  • Improve your fluency and confidence when speaking in English
  • Review and practise fundamental grammar, improving your accuracy when using English
  • Learn important academic writing skills for improving your essays/reports
  • Be more familiar with the common errors that international students make and learn how to avoid them, helping you to improve your marks
  • Improve your communication skills when giving presentations and writing emails which are important skills for work as well as for your studies
  • Learn the expectations of students in higher education as well as useful cultural knowledge, helping you to settle in more quickly

Steps to sign up
  • If you are a newly enrolled daytime blended learning student you will be contacted about this course. If this is the case, then the course content will also be available on iLearn and you don't need to do anything except turn up for your first timetabled session.
  • If you are an Arden student on any other mode of study or missed your classes in the last study block you can register your interest by emailing englishlanguagehub@arden.ac.uk and a member of the team will contact you with details of the next available course start date
