What is an English Language One-to-one appointment?

An Academic English appointment is a one-to-one meeting with an Academic English Lecturer. In this 25-minute meeting, you can look at your individual language issues in relation to your assignments.

What can I get help with?

You may wish to go through a piece of writing (no more than 500 words from your assignment) and work on improving some key areas. The Academic English Lecturer might ask you some questions about a grammatical point or ask you to rewrite a sentence so it is more academic in tone. You should send your teacher a sample of your work at least a day before the appointment so they can prepare. After you have booked a one-to-one meeting, email your writing to: englishlanguagehub@arden.ac.uk

If you aren't taking part in an Academic English course, or if you are a proficient speaker of English, a one-to-one appointment could be a good choice for you.

In the English Language Hub, we can help with any aspect of academic English, not only writing. So, we can also help you with structuring your academic presentations with sign posting language, with your intonation and delivery or give you some clarification for the correct pronunciation of key vocabulary. Always make it clear to the lecturer what you would like help with and provide a sample of your work so that they can prepare for the appointment in advance.

When should I book an appointment?

Tip: don t wait until your assignment deadline to book a one-to-one appointment. Make an appointment in the middle of the study block so you can find out your areas of weakness and improve them before your assignment is due.
